Understanding Filter Ratings

HEPA filters are capable of filtering particles of 0.3 microns via a pleated mechanical mesh. The higher the rating, the more effective your filter. These ratings can help you to match your filter to your allergens:
- Pollen grains are 30 microns, so an ordinary HVAC can filter them effectively.
- Dust mite waste is usually 20 microns.
- Cat allergens are between one and 20 microns.
Your air purifier also has a unique clean air delivery rate (CADR) that influences its efficacy. This rating measures the amount of purified air it can deliver into a room by combining micron size and air volume into a single number, so it’s the most holistic rating to use as a measure. The smaller your allergens are, the higher the CADR must be. You’ll need a 100 CADR for a small room of 155 square feet and a CADR of over 160 for a 250 square foot space.
